An electric boiler is a central heating system that heats the water in a hydronic loop using electric elements. The hot water then circulates to your radiators, hot water baseboards or radiant floor. Plomberie Chauffage Tremblay installs and replaces residential and commercial electric boilers in the Eastern Townships, on Montreal’s South Shore and in Montreal.
Why choose an electric boiler?
- No combustion: no chimney, no flue venting and no risk of carbon monoxide from the unit.
- Quiet, compact operation: it installs easily in a basement or mechanical room.
- Steady, comfortable heat: ideal with radiant floor heating or radiators.
- Precise zone control, especially when paired with smart thermostats.
- Less mechanical maintenance compared with a combustion unit.
- Energy produced in Quebec: hydroelectricity, a great option when natural gas isn’t available.
Electric boiler or gas boiler?
| Criteria | Electric boiler | Natural gas boiler |
| Venting / chimney | None | Required |
| Connection | Adequate electrical service | Natural gas line |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Annual inspection recommended |
| Best for | Homes without gas, conversions, small to mid-size buildings | Buildings already connected to gas, high heating demand |
Not sure? See our natural gas boiler page or ask us for advice: we assess your building before recommending a unit.
When should you replace your electric boiler?
- Repeated breakdowns or hard-to-find parts.
- Unit is more than 15 years old.
- Uneven or insufficient heat despite adjustments.
- Leaks, corrosion or unusual noises.
- Adding a heating zone (addition, basement, radiant floor) that your current unit can’t supply.
Replacing it preventively in the fall means you won’t have to call our emergency heating service in the middle of January.
Our process
- Assessment: area to heat, insulation, existing distribution system and the capacity of your electrical service.
- Recommendation: the right output and the right model.
- Installation or replacement: removal of the old unit, hydronic connections, purging and commissioning, in compliance with current codes.
- Settings and walkthrough: you’ll know how your system works and how to maintain it.
An electric boiler can also supply hydronic radiant floor heating, radiators or a snow melting system, and depending on the model, help produce domestic hot water.
Service areas
We install and replace electric boilers in the Eastern Townships (Dunham, Cowansville, Granby, Bromont, Farnham, etc.), on Montreal’s South Shore (Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert, Boucherville, Saint-Hubert, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, La Prairie, Candiac, Saint-Constant, Sainte-Julie, Varennes, Chambly) and in Montreal.
FAQ
What is an electric boiler?
It’s a central heating unit that heats water with electricity. The hot water then circulates through radiators, hydronic baseboards or a radiant floor.
Does an electric boiler need a chimney?
No. Since there’s no combustion, it produces no flue gases and requires neither a chimney nor an air intake.
Can an oil or gas boiler be replaced with an electric boiler?
Yes, in most cases, provided the building has enough electrical capacity. The existing hot water radiator or radiant floor network can usually be kept, which simplifies installation.
Depending on the type of system and the equipment selected, some financial assistance may be available. However, replacement with a conventional electric boiler is generally not eligible for Hydro-Québec rebates.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward replacement is usually done in half a day.
Can an electric boiler supply radiant floor heating?
Yes. It’s actually a very common combination that delivers gentle, even heat throughout the home.
